Chris Primo’s Magnificent Scribe Notes for ACC English Period 4

·         Before the bell rang, Mrs. Gill told us a story about how her many fish in her tank died, for which she blames Petco.

·         To start the class, we said our daily prayers, a “Hail Mary” and a “Glory Be”.

·         Maddie read her scribe notes, in which she calls Mrs. Gill Mr. Gill, since her “s” key wasn’t working.

·         Mrs. Gill showed us a word cloud of Kristen Scego’s scribe notes, and she showed us a recommended way to make one by using wordle.net and the snipping tool.

·         Mrs. Gill is picking up our journals next Tuesday, so be sure that those entries are long enough!

·         Today’s journal prompt: “After being struck by lightning, I wound up with the lamest superpower ever…”

·         Joe wrote about how he gained the superpower to conduct lightning, and called himself “The Lightning Rod”, but he kept getting struck by lightning because of this power that he obtained. But he was able to barbeque his food without the need for a barbeque pit.

·         Frankie wrote about how he gained the power to shrink things and turn them red.

·         Will wrote about how he gained the power of having a seven foot long tongue, and how he tripped over his tongue while trying to stop a robbery in a post office, and ended up with stamps all over his tongue.

·         Kristen wrote about how she gained the power of turning into a mermaid, and back into a human with the snap of her finger.

·         Libby wrote about how she gained the power of turning into a firefly.

·         Emily Melz wrote about how she gained the power of telling time without needing a clock, so she could show up everywhere on time.

·         Marc wrote about how he gained the power to squirt ketchup through his belly button, which is quite useful for hot dogs.

·         I wrote about how I gained the awesome power of turning into a chicken, but a damsel in distress mistook me for dinner.

·         Attention anyone reading this, we have been assigned another paper!  Each student needs to write a one to two page paper (Four hundred to five hundred words) personifying on the value that Mrs. Gill assigned the group that they were in.  While working on this paper, each group will work together on a project on the value that they were assigned.  The project should have a picture of the value, a definition poster of the value, and a multimedia presentation (Tumblr, Powerpoint, Movie Maker, or Sophie are all okay) of the value.  Each group will conduct a presentation on their project.

Scribe Notes: From a Pen's Point of View

by Annie Reuther

Hi! My name is Phil, and you are going to hear about what it is like to be in ACC English from a pen's point of view. That’s right. I said it. I am a pen. I lie on the edge of Mrs. Gill's desk every day and see what takes place on a day to day basis.
Today the class began with a small conversation about Pretty Little Liars. All the female human beings were discussing the season finale from the previous night.  Mrs. Gill thankfully interrupted that conversation with the Morning Prayer. Mrs. Gill then began this Wednesday class with the scribe notes from the day before.  Megan started to read hers and it was as if it were a script for a play. Nick soon became concerned with the fact his name was mentioned a lot in the script. Megan then said something in her script which caused Matt to laugh obnoxiously loud…how embarrassing.
Journals!!! The humans then took out their journals. I looked to my friends lying on the desks and they became nervous. This always seems to happen around this time. The humans will write their journals very frantically which causes my fellow pens’ heads to throb. I am always thankful I am not a part of that. The title of the journal for the day was “Lame.” It was supposed to be written about a lame superpower you might somehow receive that you don’t want. Mrs. Gill then played the song "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down. We caught a "flash" of the music video showing an old man in his underwear. All the humans seemed to get a good laugh from this before the screen went back to the journal prompt. Many of the students were very excited to read their journals today.
The first one to go was Gina. She wrote about how she received the power to make people fall asleep with the clap of her hand. The downside to this was that if she was dancing or laughing she would end up in a room full of people that were out. Drew went next. His story was something I could relate to! His superpower was he could hear the voices of writing utensils (I wondered to myself if he knew any of my friends). He wrote about how he would hear the pencils screaming when they were being sharpened (I am sure glad that I am a pen).  Michael was third. His superpower was about being able to remove his socks without removing his shoes, apparently everyone in his “Michael's World” thinks that’s amazing! Nick wrote about being able to change his skin color and how it was an advantage to not being beat up in the ghetto (Matt said racist much??).
The next thing covered in class was the American Value group assignment (there will be a document on edline this evening for further details). Mrs. Gill wants to decorate the walls with the posters from the project so they must look good!! I then looked around the class because I heard a lot of tapping. Matt was hitting his pen on his head (for reasons that are unknown) and Michael was tapping his on his desk and many other humans were biting on their pens.  For a pen these are some of the worst things to happen to them.  I am sure that for the people around, it gets quite annoying. Mrs. Gill said one last thing before letting us get in our groups. She explained the prewrite assignment lack specific detail in some peoples work and that she needs the sense of drama in the question.
This is just one of the days in a pens life.  Next time you chew, tap, or throw a pen think about me; pens can bleed in all colors.

P.S. Paper copy of memoir due Friday!!!!

Madeline Russell's Scribe Notes

-    Mr. Gill firt tried to help me get crumb out from under the key between letter “a” and “d”, but a you can ee, it’ not working too well, o I apologize now. It only work ometime.

-    Our journal for today wa tagged “Value Peronification” which wa uppoed to be a figure we imagined that lived life by their name

-    An example Mr. Gill gave wa “Courage”

-    The ong we listened to wa “Courage is” by The Strange Familiar that wa very oothing

-    Hrebec got called on for the econd time to read and she thought he could get away with only one entence, and he did…he wrote about resourcefulness and happily got a checkmark by her name

-    Kayla wrote about resourcefulness who was a girl with a very interesting life. Of course Kayla had a nice writing; she always amazes me with what she can write about.

-    Madeline M. wrote about a boy named strength, who played sports and stood up for himself

-    In Joe’ writing, he described strength a “AWESOME”, mainly because it was a boy and girl. Strength lacked one thing which was courage; strength was a bully, using it power for evil and not good

-    Sam Kolton wrote equality, a guy who wore a shirt with an equal sign

-    Mrs. Gill found Dyknow which she loves, but we all hate and it’s no secret

-    Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii THIS IS AWKWARD HI MRS ..gill CAN YOU READ THIS MRS GILLLL!!!!!????

-    ^ That wa when Mrs. Gill read my computer screen aloud to the cla and I wanted to see if she would say “HI” back, but she never did L

-    She also made fun of my uele keyboard

-    Kate wanted to see if “it would go away” when she turned off the internet. Kate, are you trying to hide something?

-    Omeone announced it being Emily Thorn’s birthday, so naturally Kate and I started inging happy birthday at the same time and stopped pretty quickly because it was weird.

-    Mrs. Gill’s daughter graduated high school at the age of 16 which shocked us all

-    Abby was freaking out because she wrote “HI” in big letters during dyknow and Mr. Gill never saw it, until Abby said something very loudly of course

-    We all typed our way into the Literacy Memoir, some of us were just starting, some were in the middle of it and on our way to finishing

-    Kayla started talking about Mr. Bubbles, and I frankly had no idea what she was talking about

-    Somehow Pikachu came up on the Dyknow, and Mrs. Gill, to my surprise, said “I choose you, Pikachu!”

-    Emily Thorn got a birthday cookie and Max became very envious

-    Marc was “dignified” about going to the bathroom, and then Mrs. Gill got angry because we were talking about bathrooms

-    Will spent a good minute and a half looking around the room trying to find someone who would give him gum. He didn’t get gum…

Observations from an absent-minded English student

Scribe notes from August 30, 2011, composed by Megan L. Robison (that's me.), and written in the style of a script.

SETTING: A high school classroom. Three of the walls are painted a dull yellow, while the fourth is the sort of pastel green normally associated with artificial flavoring. A teacher’s desk sits in the front left corner, adorned with a “NO CUSSING” jar and decorative “point” (which may or may not have been the result of an act of vandalism). Beside the desk is fishbowl, containing the three fish who’ve managed not to die (yet).

The bell rings, and students stand to listen to one of Mr. Chio’s notoriously long prayers. DREW pops up in the doorway at one point, leaves, and returns with a slip from the office. JENNIFER also arrives late, but is more prepared than DREW and already has a note. In a few more minutes, EMILY arrives late as well. Maybe there’s some truth to the statement that people are most tired on Tuesdays.

MRS. GILL: Go ahead and take out your journals.
Students scramble to take out their books while MRS. GILL pulls up a powerpoint on the board.

NICK: What’s the title?

MRS. GILL: Good question…

She eventually comes up with a title for the assignment, which is to personify an American Value. It is a fun assignment.

MRS. GILL: No PBJ this time. This is, in a sense, a prewrite. Think about the value I assigned to you yesterday. If it were a person, what would they be like? What would they wear, eat, act like? Would they have a family? Describe them.

She pauses.

MRS. GILL: I know most of you are probably annoyed that I’ve assigned you another paper after you just handed one in, but so far I haven’t gotten any pushback. I’m impressed. [Pause]. Unless you just aren’t complaining to my face. Is it going on a lot in the hall?

NICK: Not really.

MRS. GILL pulls up a song on YouTube

MRS. GILL: I tried to find a song that personifies a value-

KRISTEN: It’s MY song!!!

The song, Courage Is, plays while students write in their journals. Well, for a few seconds at least before it stops abruptly. There are a few seconds of uncomfortable silence.

MRS. GILL: …I’m trying to be fancy here but I’m not doing a good job.

The song starts again, and plays to its proper end this time. MRS. GILL notes that she keeps our class’s papers in a green folder. Green is a good color for our class.

MRS. GILL: Anybody wanna read?

NICK: Jeff hasn’t read yet!

MRS. GILL: What a good friend you are. [To Jeffrey]. You have a checkmark. An unearned checkmark?

JEFFREY reads his journal entry about pleasure. According to JEFFREY, pleasure is a happy person who spreads his happiness on to other people.

MRS. GILL: I’m a little surprised that you didn’t go into the more negative aspects of pleasure. [To the class]. This tells me that Jeffrey has a pure heart.

Much laughter. JEFFREY’s face is red, naturally. (He is a redhead, after all.)

No one else volunteers to read, so GINA is selected. She reads an entry about Success, who wears a suit and has a good job and family. Like JEFFREY, she doesn’t go into the more negative characteristics of success. MRS. GILL talks for a bit about the connection between family and success.

MRS. GILL: Actually, whenever students come back and visit me from college, I don’t ask them about how their English classes are. The question I ask the most is if they have a boyfriend or girlfriend. In the long run, your classes and schoolwork aren’t really what’s important. Forming a family is where you get your happiness.

She stops to let that sink in. A teacher telling students that their lives shouldn’t be completely school-focused?! This is a new concept indeed.

MRS. GILL: I’m going to let you all do some composition work today. Feel free to take out your computers.

NICK: What is composition?

MRS. GILL either doesn’t hear him or has somehow developed the rare ability to tune him out.

MATT: [suddenly] I took the wrong laptop…

MRS. GILL: Oh no!

He leaves.

MRS. GILL: That reminds me of an old prank buddy I had. There was one time when I moved her desk out of her office and replaced it with one of those little kindergarten desks. I even arranged all her things on it and everything.

She gets distracted by the DyKNOW.

MRS. GILL: I want you all to be getting started on your literacy memoir. Learn how to monitor yourself, but I will be watching you with the DyKNOW to see what gets you off track. This is to help you. It seems like a waste of money to pay for a college class and not pay attention. I’d like a digital copy of these memoirs to be turned in on Friday, as well as a paper copy, so that we can work with them in class.

She continues to fool with the DyKNOW, pulling up ZACH’s screen and correcting the spacing.

MRS. GILL: Look, I can chat you! I don’t even have to talk to you students anymore, I can just message you.

ZACH has more technical difficulties, and MRS. GILL shows the class how to do a header and footer.

Suddenly everyone’s typing is interrupted by a pop up. It’s a poll from MRS. GILL! Oh, the wonders of DyKNOW.

MRS. GILL: It seems everyone’s responded to my poll except-

JEFFREY: I didn’t know what it was, so I x’ed out of it…

DISAPPOINTMENT.

The class continues to work on their literacy memoirs until the period ends. It’s time for Physics. Huzzah! [Heavy sarcasm].

REMEMBER: Digital AND printed copy of Literacy memoirs are due Friday. Journals will be collected Friday as well.

Scribe notes by Joseph Rogers

P.S. Homework is to start on the literary memoir essay due Friday 9/2.

Scribe Notes by Kristen Scego

-          As usual the class started the day with prayer followed by Mrs. Gill reminding me that I’m the scribe today.

-          The class turned in the pre-writing questions plus addendums we had for homework which is worth 35 points

-          Mrs. Gill did attendance

-          Went through Emily’s scribe notes for the other class because Joe’s scribe notes were not up there yet

-          Somehow we got talking about how Mrs. Gill doesn’t like when people put their butts on desks and other things that disturb her

-          We also talked about her husband reading our scribe notes and him saying our class seems lightweight; he can’t see a serious purpose although Mrs. Gill's English teacher friends love our scribe notes blog

-          Mrs. Gill informed us that the purpose of the prewrite is to reassure her that we know what we’re going to talk about in our paper. She said “Get the prewrite right, and you’re more likely to get the paper right”

-          The journal today was the introduction to our paper or we could just write a memory of having to read or write

-          The song was by John Mayer – Stop This Train

-          When it comes time to read our journals Abby talked about hating reading when she was little and eventually reading anything that she could get her hands on

-          Kayla described how she uses character in her writing and how she impacts people with her insights

-          When Hannah was called on she immediately stated that she had zoned out

-          Cody talked about when he was little and how he still does not like to read

-          After the journals Mrs. Gill talked about how to approach the paper. She told us that a memoir has a point and that in our paper we must establish what the point is. Our memoir is more personal than argumentative, but it still should have a point.

-          The paper is due Friday at beginning of class. Stay tuned for instructions about how to turn it in. Mrs. Gill may not want to use turnitin.com on this one because the papers are taking too long to download

-          Today we were also given new seats so that we would be seated around our inquiry groups. This was followed by each group getting an American value such as freedom, pleasure, resourcefulness, and success

-          Then the class read an introduction by the famous author Alice Sebold, who wrote The Lovely Bones (everyone agreed the movie was creepy). Mrs. Gill asked us to identify the unifying thread that the author was setting up in the introduction.

-          Max thought the theme was her overcoming dyslexia  and Katy thought it was achievement (how she went from being excluded to being included). Both of those are correct.

-          Each group was then given a literacy memoir introduction to read and a few minutes to identify the organizing principal

-          Emily, Katy, and Kayla read and told the class what their introduction was saying. One centered on resistance, another a passion for reading, and a third how reading influences a person’s life and choices.

-          Then class ended. Homework is to continue on the literacy memoir, which we will work on in class tomorrow and be ready to turn in by the start of class Friday.

Stream of consciousness: Joe Siegel, Ph.D, MD, ADHD, AM and FM

Class is starting. Frankie won’t stop talking about Portal 2. Tim’s putting on a hoodie. Why is he putting on a hoodie? It’s not that cold in here. He looks like a turtle…

BELL

Senior sunrise was successful. SUCCESS! (Final Fantasy IV victory fanfare)

Mrs. Gill may have had a stroke. She looks fine to me, but what do I know? NOTHING

It’s peanut butter journal time…I’d better get out my writing thingy. Hold on a sec

I could swear that song had something to do with conquistadores. Oh man, did I do my History homework? Oh wait I didn’t have any. Did I?… I’ll have to ask Marc. Oh no but he’s writing. What’s he writing? My God, how can he even read his own writing?!

Mrs. Gill is totally writing on the board. What’s she writing? She’s standing in front of it! Gaahh!

Someone’s reading. I don’t know her name. I think it’s Katherine or Kaitlyn or something. She’s reading about forgiveness! It’s not even a story, it’s just a….words.

ABBY. She’s reading in the third-person. She got flushed down a toilet, then apologized to her friends and her mom. Awww. She forgave some people. Yay! Hannah smiled at her. I wonder why? Is there somethin’ goin’ on thar?

Mrs. Gill’s going to take our journal! NO! My journal!!

Oh she’s taking them in groups. Thank God. I can make a replica before she steals it from me. I’ll put in in my vault.

Tim’s scribe notes. I almost spelled scribe scrivbe. Haha. Tim doesn’t know the title of the song. What’s he saying? Volunteer work at the barn. Marc’s scribe notes. What? Why is he reading about Marc’s scribe notes inside his? IT’S THE MATRIX!! RUN FOR IT!!

Abby said thank you for getting two mentions. Mrs. Gill is saying she dominated the class. Abby dominates the competition!! Yeahhhh….

We’re gonna do something QUICKLY!! Wait did she say we’d go outside?! YES! Oh man I don’t want to go outside it’s too hot.

We have to write down what Americans value. How am I supposed to know? I’m only one American. We’ll have to collaborate. It’s the only way.

FREEDOM. Apparently independence and freedom are the same thing. When was someone going to tell me about this?

BAHAHA did Marc just say food? What a genius. He’s on to something there.

Material comfort. Ahhhhh….

There’s so many things being written on the board. Respect, pride, comfort, family, TRUST! FRIENDS!! WHERE’S MCDONALD’S?!? In France? What?

Perseverance. Nice job Frankus

Will said Hypocrisy but he pronounced it like hippo-crissy.

Mrs. Gill talking about BIG things in a Japanese accent. Awesome.

Greed! Muhahahaha

Power. We’ve got the power….

IT’S OVER NINE-THOUSAAAAAND!!!

We’re number one!

Pride. I’m not proud. I’m just the best. Ever.

Our country is sooo beautiful. Apparently people talk about it. Hey, we’ve got a beautiful, provident land. Cool.

Religion? Latin? Avada Kedavra!! You dead. Lay down because you dead.

Diversi-T. I spelled it wrong, I know, but I don’t really care. Do you? If you do then you have problems.

This word document is absolutely full of red squiggly underlines.

Time to write on the notecard.

IMA FIRIN’ MAH LAZER!!!

Preferred editing partners? Obviously Mr. T, Marc

Marc listed 4 people. What? How stupid was that?! Apparently not very stupid at all Mrs. Gill thinks it’s a good idea. Don’t put a period there. It’s all one sentence!

Mrs. Gill put sunglasses on top of her head. Those are nice sunglasses.

She’s talking. Choose a partner, go outside? Play kickball? Kickball? Portal 2?

SHE HAZ A WHISTLE. When she be whistlin’, time’s up.

Aw maaaaan we can’t go into the woods. Maybe she’ll let Carlye and I run to Queenie Park. I’d probably have to stop though. I can’t run in these shoes! I’ll ask Carlye if she can run in her shoes. She says no. I’m off the hook!

Well she didn’t want to run there anyway, sooo…….

Sorry I was outside. I’m back now.

Frankie proclaimed that if I were to correct his papers, I would see his name on them and then just say it’s awful. Ha! That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard.

Ameerricaaa.

If you look at the speaker, the clock, and the digital clock, it looks like a skull face with a monocle.

I think class is almost over. I’m hungry.

Mrs. Gill said the class would take a drive sometime.

Marc and Tim are going to the football game. Haha! Of course they’re going! THEY’RE PLAYING!

The football game is not free. It should be.

All right class is over. I’m going to turn my brain off now.
