Scribe Notes –Friday, October 28, 2011

From the Eyes and Mind of Michelle Silva

Class started normally with a prayer by Mr. Chio, it went something like everyone being perfect, but we all know I’m perfect so there was nothing new there. We also heard on the morning announcements that people throughout the day would ‘die’ by the grim reaper, since every 40 minutes someone dies at the hands of a drunk driving accident. Apparently this was too much information to handle for some, and it helped me see just who couldn’t comprehend the easiest of things at 8am. Next we learned that Nick wasn’t in class but his back pack was found in the commons. This makes me wonder where Nicole is. We also notice that Zack isn’t in class either; what a shame.

We then continued with daily routine of the Journal with a topic of Scary Story. We were supposed to write about what scares you, if you had a scary story, or make up a scary story. I only remember one of the Journal entries, since I only figured out minutes before that I was the scribe (apparently my name looked like Michael and was chicken scratch to Mrs. Gill). I remember specifically Kelly’s journal entry of how she was locked in the convent hall way by the hands of Michael Klein, and how she cried to be let out. The only reason I remember this entry was because I couldn’t really understand why someone would cry about that sort of thing (no offense Kelly). But I guess she would have a reason to fear since ghosts do love to feed on red headed gingers.

After the discussion of journals we attempted to finish the vocabulary that we had started the other day. We were unsuccessful. This brought us to the end of the class period where Mrs. Gill wished us a wonderful weekend but said to be careful and to make good decisions. What does she consider a ‘good’ decision?

Scribe notes: 10/27/11; Period 4

Today was a very unusual day. Usually we are relatively quiet for Mrs. Gill’s period 4 ACC English class, but today we were very outgoing. Mrs. Gill repeatedly told us to quiet down and not to have a “social life” during class. We started out with the prayer as always, soon after Max, Hrebec and Carlye all read their scribe notes. Afterwards, Mrs. Gill described the red embroidered “A” in The Scarlet Letter. Kristen Scego and I could not wait for lunch, so we started eating early…she asked for a bite of my sandwich and devoured a third of it but then gave me some crackers. Kayla Swanson asked in the middle of class “Mrs. Gill if it wasn’t against the law, would you kill someone?” Mrs. Gill seemed shocked, but she surprisingly said “Yes, because of apostrophe’s’. (I messed that up on purpose)”

Before journaling, we all give our ideas of what song we should listen to for the topic “Red Ribbon Week.” Kristen Scego suggested “Whiskey Lullaby”- one of the most depressing songs all of us have ever heard. Abby Primo mentioned “S&M” by Rihanna and Kate laughed from across the room, eavesdropper. Emily Melz read her journal first, she wrote about the effectiveness of the speaker Tuesday. Then we talked about why teenagers drink and most of us agreed that the parents drinking or not will affect their children’s views on drinking. Next, Sam Koltun read his journal. He wrote about how Red Ribbon Week makes us aware of the consequences destructive decisions could have.

Lastly, Mrs. Gill introduced a quick assignment to us. There were 26 words on the board and each of us was assigned a word. We had to make one slide on Power Point that included: the word, part of speech, example of it used in a sentence, image. Mrs. Gill made it clear that we were not allowed to use Adam and Eve as a picture. Abby Primo blatantly lies when she stated “I can’t find a picture of Dumbledore”…LIE. Lastly, Paul awkwardly walked into the class, grabbed his lunch, and awkwardly walked out.

Max Nutter's scribe notes 10/24

Once upon a time, in a magical land called Manchester, there was a tiny school where extremely talented and attractive students learned how to be successful. Their professors were intelligent, experienced and brave. These professors were well-respected by the students lucky enough to be in their presence. Out of all the classes gathered at the tiny school, the third-year students were the very best. They demonstrated their wide range of abilities by winning the school-wide dodgeball competition two years in a row. In particular, the second advanced English class, taught by Professor Gill, amazed the rest of the school with talents to which no other students’ could be compared.

Their class began like any other with prayer. Professor Gill, dedicated to improving the already-incredible writing skills of her students, told them to journal about their personal beliefs on fate and free will to the musical genius of the Good Life by Three Days Grace. At the same time as the class was writing, Mrs. Gill explained that the journal for the following day would focus upon a synthesis paper which the students had worked on the previous week. When the song had ended, Mrs. Gill called on various students to talk about what they had written; Kristen believed that some things were meant to happen, Kate claimed that people’s fates were already decided, Chris said that the fate of a person depended on their use of free will, Kayla thought to look at a person’s mistakes and how they interact with one’s fate, and Marc stated that fate was something which people should work to take into their own hands.

After wrapping up their discussion on the journal, Professor Gill proceeded to explain the workload involved in reading the class’s new novel, the Scarlet Letter. She intended to have the class include note-taking and annotations in their reading. In reading the “dense, yet potentially rewarding text,” Professor Gill wanted students to mark any passages which stood out or caught their attention. She presented notes which the students took down onto a document transmitted to their computers about the Scarlet Letter unit. At the end of the class, Professor Gill elaborated upon the importance of reading the Scarlet Letter’s first chapter—called its Custom House chapter—and the deadlines for various forms of homework. Before students left the class, Professor Gill gave them a pledge which they were to sign, promising their own effort in working with what would most definitely be a challenging novel. Class ended and the students left to continue another morning at the tiny but wonderful school in the magical land of Manchester.

DA NA NA NA DA NA NA NA DA NA NA NAAAAAA SCRIBE NOTES!

Hannah's period 4 scribe notes for Tuesday, 10/25

Class has now begun! Prayer is said, I take a look around…where is everyone? Oh…some field trip for open house training… after prayer we begin to watch the music video for Paradise by Coldplay. I see an elephant riding a bike? I like it..! ELEPHANTE! Sadly Mrs. Gill’s laptop died, so the music video was not finished…until I got home that it. On to the next thing that happened! Our synthesis essays were handed back…I didn’t receive one because I was absent the day they were written. Journal entry was to write about a reflection on our synthesis essay…I got to make an awkward walk to the front of the class to talk to Mrs. Gill about how I do not have one...Yay for awkwardness! Story of my life? Yea, pretty much. ANYWAY IM DISTRACTED! TOO MUCH MUSIC! Sorry that has nothing to do about class… ANY WHO! We begin to talk about The Custom House in The Scarlet Letter. Mrs. Gill says something about having a ceremony with fire after we finish reading The Scarlet Letter. Mmmm fire! Maddie mentions how she won’t be there for some quizzes, its ok Maddie, I feel your pain. I’m going to miss an assessment, the project, in class essay, the test, and paper…yay… finally we begin to take notes. The power point that we took notes over will be on edline for all of the people who weren’t there. Notes notes notes la de daaaa. Scribe Notes from Oct. 21

by Zack Mushinski

Well today is October 21st, two days before the day after tomorrow, and the world is supposed to end today...  But nevertheless we started with a prayer, and then the back corner of the room exploded in activity… not really.  Our journal is about Playing Ball, and some memories of our past experiences with baseball.  Apparently Jeff has hit multiple home runs and a grand slam, Michelle had the best night of her life at a World Series game the other night, and Joe was witness to drunken people.  Megan doesn’t like sports…  Nick wrote about Jeff getting hit by a ball, and he charged the mound (because he’s a ginger) and shanked the pitcher in the arm.  Kristen likes the food there more than the game, which doesn’t make any sense to me.  Now Mr. Scarfino goes to read his scribe notes that talk about our period yesterday.  He uses a lot of big words… I wish I knew what they meant.  Someone is African in here is seems.  Also,  Mrs. Gill is an illiterate kindergartener, which I didn’t know either.  OH GOD MEGAN IS DOING MATH HOMEWORK; WE’D BETTER BURN HER OR SOMETHING.

Now we’re talking about one of the synthesis papers someone wrote on Wednesday.  Nick gave it a 6 because the argument doesn’t match with what the thesis is.  Mrs. Gill agreed with that, and went on to explain why.  Now we get to look at others essays for the rest of class, and Mrs. Gill still has no idea what she’s doing.  Oh wait, she’s explaining the Scarlet Letter.  Or is she?  Hey is about adultery!  Now she’s telling us the first chapter isn’t important… why do we have to read it if it isn’t important?  Michael is being slandered, now I think Mrs. Gill is confusing him. Or me.  Now we have the rest of class to read those boring essays.  Just kidding they’re extremely interesting.   Oh and no homework (unless you want to read The Scarlet Letter).

Nick's period 2 scribe notes

Oct. 21, 2011

ACC English Period 2 was a relatively uneventful class today. And it was short. What a great day to be the scribe.  We start off the day with prayer, and I am told that I am today’s historian.  Since we haven’t read scribe notes for a while, all of the unsung heroes of the past few days go up to the computer and read their works. Andrew reads his detailed entertaining scribe notes.  Blake reads his non-descriptive, boring scribe notes. And Mike goes up to the board and starts to read what sounds like a mumbled African chant and sits down.

After that, we write our journal prompt. Today’s prompt, labeled GEAR, features an American solider loaded with equipment, kneeling down on the side of a rural road. Michael reads his entry first. It was the typical “Michael” entry, with barely anything making logical sense, but still makes the entire class stare in awe at his genius. Annie reads her very deep entery about fighting for God and Country. Drew reads a humorous story about the scum on the soldier’s boot. And last but not least, Joe reads about a very, very angry solider that loves France, crap, and sons of biscuits.

After that we talk about reviewing synthesis essays. Mrs. Gill passes out copies of Carlye’s essay (It’s was no secret Mrs. Gill; you failed). For the rest of the class period, Mrs. Gill tries to discover a way to hide future essay writers’ identities. She tries scribbling on her copy with Sharpie like an illiterate Kindergartener, but to no avail. It’s okay Mrs. Gill we all have rough days. At least it was a short period.

Libby's Scribe notes from Thursday 10-20

Dear Angie,

Kayla Swanson is so mean to me.  Today in our period 4 ACC English class she laughed at me because I had to be the scribe.  The scribes from previous days, Will and Kate, started class by telling us what they wrote.  Mrs. Gill’s phone went off in class.  It was really funny.  Kayla wants to get Mrs. Gill’s phone number from Paul so she can call her during class.  As you may have noticed, Kayla’s kind of a trouble maker.  When Will and Kate finished reading their scribe notes we started our journal.  The prompt was called “Gear.”   Mrs. Gill put a picture of a soldier in a pretty field on the board and we had to write about what we saw.  She played “Hero” by Skillet while we wrote for a few minutes.  It was kind of a depressing prompt. L.  Once we all finished Joe and Tyler offered to read their journals.  Joe always has interesting ones.  Today he wrote about a lone soldier who had electric guitars thrown at him by gophers.  Ya I don’t know either..  Tyler took a more realistic approach to the prompt.  He wrote about the soldier and his comrades in the field.   Then Mrs. Gill handed out a synthesis essay rubric and one of the essays from another class.  She attempted to mark the name off the essay but failed.  The essay belongs to Jeffery…he’s a ginger.   Anyway, we had to read his essay and then grade it based on the rubric.  Well tell your husband (hes a cubs fan) I say hey and that this is what the cardinals have won 10 world series and the cubs have won how many….oh that’s right only two and that was like one hundred years ago.

                LOVE your favorite sister,

Kate Antor Scribe notes from 10-17

English class began today with a bit of chaos. Lots of small discussions were happening around the class. Once all was settled, Joe read his scribe notes from the previous Thursday after Mrs. Gill proclaims that students are making it more and more difficult to put their scribe notes on the blog, meaning they are going out of the box. Anyway, as usual, most students got a chuckle out of Joe’s creative work, which consisted of Joe, Frankie, Abby, Mrs. Gill, and the test as characters in a video game. Next, Kristen read her scribe notes from Friday, which was in the form of a newspaper article. Once they were finished, the class got into a heated discussion about music genres. Mrs. Gill admitted her liking for death metal; she states, “I could admire a good scream in the middle of a song.” But she explains that she basically enjoys all genres. Soon after and not surprisingly, the cardinals were brought up and a discussion was continued as Mrs. Gill prepared the journal for us. Ironically right after a test, the journal topic was “Cheating”; the prompt began with “I wasn’t really cheating. I was just…” You finish the sentence. We listened to “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. Joe read and talked about the time that he and Marc got caught “cheating” on Spanish, but still to this day they are not positive if they were truly cheating. Kayla talked about how she used someone else’s PowerPoint in Tech class freshman year. Abby says that cheating can be a confidence booster just to make sure your answer is right, and when she and the other person get it wrong she “doesn’t feel like the only idiot in the world.” Frankie read and talked about getting caught by the cheating police and ending up in a hospital bed. We established that the fish are still alive…Finding Nemo was brought up. Sam suggested we get an octopus. Mrs. Gill talked about the synthesis essay and what is expected. Information possibly on edline? We printed source papers and talked with peers about the essay for the remainder of class, which we are writing on Wednesday. Have sources ready to write about on Wednesday.

We arrive to class
As we walk in some of us notice that we are missing Kelly, Joseph, and Michelle
Now we got started with a prayer
After prayer Kohlberg says he forgot his journal and had to go visit his locker real quick
The journal assignment is to write about the justice cases of Anwar Al-Awlaki, Megan Meier, The Branch Davidians of Waco, Westboro Baptist Church
Good thing some of us--well, at least me--have never heard anything of these
The music was some country song with a little Mexican beat to it
We go into details about each of these people and cases
Nick gets the good point trophy for his crazy journal
Mrs. Gill announces we are going to write a paper next week on when the law is helpless
She gives us a slide show and says to not be concerned with slide 18 – 27

Synthesis Essay – essay we are going to write next week
Introduction

-          Important part of our life and future, choosing a college, buying a car

-          An essay that includes research

-          We will be given sources on the topic

The Prompt

-          A question will guide our topic and research

-          Guide

o   The actions of a rogue individual can wreak havoc on peaceful societies. From the schoolyard bully to the terrorist ideologue, people who don’t play by the rules are very seldom constrained by them. For this reason, some have argued that important legal principles can be suspended when it comes to the dangers posed by certain lawless individuals.
After reading the following sources carefully, write an essay in which you defend, refute or qualify that position. You are required to use at least three of the sources in support of your argument, and you should in some way use or reference or quote Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. You may paraphrase or directly quote your sources.

Andrew Manott's 8-13 Scribe Notes

·        We didn’t start class with a prayer today! GASP

·        Kristen thinks it’s upsetting how for homework Per. 4 gets a smiley face and our class doesn’t.

·        Mrs. Gill told us that our test would be longer than period 4s.

·        She said there would be drawing on the test instead of essays.

·        Mr. Hayes stopped by, Hi Mr. Hayes!!!

·        Anyone who will not be here the rest of the week needs to take their test by Monday.

·        Mrs. Gill told us not to do the whole study guide since its junior ring night.

·        We looked at our notes over The Crucible.

·        Apparently we never finished our notes.

·        Gina had all the notes that she took from when she was in a different class.

·        The board lied to me because we didn’t pray and we didn’t do a journal.

·        I keep getting distracted from the notes or I just keep zoning in and out.

·        I only see two fish in the fish bowl, maybe the others disappeared.

·        For some reason, notes just don’t seem that interesting, in any class really.

·        Tragic heroes are always utterly destroyed or killed. That’s really the only part of the notes that I have paid attention too so far.

·        Nick is talking in the background about killing people and it’s just annoying.

·        We had an interesting conversation about people killing someone’s father and the son marrying the mother (gross).

·        Mrs. Gill says that the test is not tricky, yet Michael seems to be doubtful of her statement.

·        Mrs. Gill is trying to scare us with the test by saying its super long.

·        The other class was mad at Mrs. Gill.

·        PSAT people are back!

·        Mrs. Gill said Abigail wasn’t guilty of witchcraft, she was just guilty of being a “hoe”.

·        There was no witchcraft so there really was no one to blame, except for Tituba apparently.

·        Mrs. Gill says that everyone will have their so called “silly season” ahead of them.

·        Now we can work on our study guide!!!!

·        Study for the test tomorrow.

Will's Oct. 13 Scribe Notes

Today I was fortunate enough to be the scribe on a day when we didn’t have class.

Instead I had the joy of eating donuts and socializing with people.

We did have a song though, and it was Eye of the Tiger, which Joe put in our junior ring video, which was very good.

Unfortunately there was not much more that I have to write about so it was a very good day.

Scribe Notes 10-11-11

English class was rather mundane and subdued today. After returning from a three day weekend, most people seemed lifeless and tired for the first class of the morning. Class began with prayer over the announcements. We then moved on to Katrina’s scribe notes, which were in the form of a game of Jeopardy. Throughout this game, several of the students expressed their anger about Mr. Grasser and his physics test. We got an insightful look into Mrs. Gill’s personal life shortly afterward when she informed us of her infatuation with the actors who portrayed Proctor and Hale in The Crucible movie. She enlightened us even further when she told us that she found a website where we can chat with a librarian anytime, 24/7. I know what I’m going to be doing this Saturday night. We moved on to our first journal in quite some time, and today’s theme was “Picture the Music”. Our task was to describe a piece of music using a sense other than hearing. After listening to an anonymous piece of piano music, Zack described it as being “light and fluffy”, while Kohlberg elected to use a PBJ and described his weekend experience of losing to Ritter and going to a rodeo. We were then given a test review sheet for the Crucible chock full of fun quotes and questions. At 8:39, Jeffrey smiled. We continued work on these questions until the conclusion of class.
We have no homework, but we review in class tomorrow for our Crucible test on Thursday.--Michael Klein

Chris’s Scribe Notes for ACC English 3 Period 4

To start out another great day of our English class, I heard a very weird conversation that Abby, Will, and Marc had.  They were conversing about why African Americans are called “blacks people” instead of “brown people”, since they think that they look brown.  They questioned why they even brought it up in the first place and they silenced themselves.

After the bell rang, the class began with the daily prayer, which included a “Hail Mary” and a “Glory Be”.  After saying the daily prayer, Abby came up to Mrs. Gill’s laptop and began to read her scribe notes, which looked like she wrote it in the form of an e-mail.  After Abby read her scribe notes, Mrs. Gill showed us our journal of the day, which was called “Picture the Music”, which related to a neurological condition called Synthesia.  This condition mixes up the afflicted person’s senses, so the person thinks that they are smelling letters, or seeing the sounds of the ocean.  Everyone in the class listened to a song, and they had to describe the song using their senses other than hearing for the journal.  Max wrote about how he pictured fast and slow people running up and down stairs to get to their destinations.  Marc wrote about how he pictured a delicious tenderloin and how the song made him angry for some apparent reason.  Hannah wrote about how the song made her imagine a girl at a ball, dancing to the music and a ballerina dancing to a solo.

Mrs. Gill is willing to offer someone the film of The Crucible, but she is going to find a way to share the URL with everyone, so that everyone is able to see the movie if they want to.  The test for The Crucible has been announced.  The test will take place tomorrow after debating when to actually take the test.  Thursday will not work because the first period of the day, which is period four will be missed by the Juniors because of the Junior Ring breakfast.  Friday won’t work either because people who are participating in Youth Leadership will be gone on that day.  Mrs. Gill sent every student a copy of the study guide of The Crucible through DyKnow.  Everything that should be studied includes quotes from the play, notes on the PowerPoint presentations, notes on drama, and the dynamic and static characters of The Crucible.  Everyone should be able to relate their American value to the play, and if it affected the play in a good or a bad way.   Not only is there a test tomorrow, but there is also an upcoming essay on The Crucible that will be started in class on Monday, and will be due at the end of class on that same day.  There will be certain sources that Mrs. Gill will put up on Edline.  About three of these sources should be compared and related to The Crucible, which is what the essay will be about.  Everyone grouped up into their American value groups near the end of the class period to get started on some ideas about what to pout regarding how their American value relates to the play.  After coming up with many ideas, another ACC English 3 class ended for Period 4.

Hey Abby.  I heard you were the scribe today.  What’d we do?

Oct 7, 4:34 pm

Hey!  Well some students were late to class today due to a Physics test, but we all showed up eventually.  Then, Lauren gave her fantastic scribe notes in Spanish.  After this, Mrs. Gill made me aware I was scribing.  Soon Mrs. Gill told us we had no homework and claimed she was becoming “soft”.  After that, somehow the class got on the subject of reading in class.  Mrs. Gill said that if she were to catch a student reading a book for fun she would just brush it off.  If it were another textbook she’d be pretty mad though.

Well then we finished The Crucible.  We left off at a really long speech given by Hale.  I read Rebecca, Kayla was Elizabeth, Max was Hale, Danforth was read by Frankie, Parris was read by Joe, Herrick was read by Will, and Proctor was read by Tyler.

Hale wanted the men to forgive the prisoners because they wouldn’t confess. Danforth tell him that this will cause a controversy due to the accused and the living. Hale warns that the officials are going to start rebelling. Salem had become chaos.  Everyone started living in fear of being accused of witchcraft, and there are rumors of revolt.  Danforth hopes that Elizabeth can convince Proctor to admit to wizardry. Elizabeth says she’ll speak with Proctor but made no promises.  They leave John and Elizabeth.  Elizabeth told Proctor that almost one hundred people have confessed. She told him that Giles was killed by being pressed to death by large stones.  In order to force him to give a plea, the court tortured him by pressing him, but he kept refusing, and the weight eventually crushed him. His last words were “more weight.”

Wait there’s more!  Proctor asked Elizabeth if she thought that he should confess. He said that he does not hold out because of religious reasons.  After he thought about it, Proctor agrees to confess. Hathorne and Danforth were happy and the confession had to be written.  Proctor wondered why they do this. Danforth told him that it will be posted on the church door. The men brought Rebecca to watch Proctor confess.  Proctor gave his confession, and Danforth asked him if he ever saw Rebecca Nurse with the devil. Proctor said no. Danforth read the other names of the condemned and asked if he had seen them with the devil.  Proctor again replied no.  Proctor hesitated to sign the confession.  He signed his name but took the sheet from Danforth. Danforth demanded the confession as proof. Proctor would not allow him to nail the paper with his name on the church door and tore the confession in two.  Herrick takes the condemned prisoners, including Proctor, to the gallows. Hale and Parris pleaded with Elizabeth to save Proctor, but she refused.

Well, then there’s the epilogue!  Not long afterward, Parris is voted out of office, leaves Salem, and was never heard from again. There were rumors that Abigail became a prostitute in Boston. Mrs. Gill told us who she thought were static and dynamic characters.  She thought the static characters were Reverend Parris, Abigail, Mary, and Danforth.  Parris was always about himself, Abigail was always slightly insane and blaming others for things she caused, Mary always seemed like a coward and a follower, and Danforth was always set on court rules, not ever considering anything beyond that.  The dynamic characters were Proctor, Hale, and Elizabeth.  Proctor finally forgives himself, Hale learns that he is not always right, and Elizabeth admits that the affair was partially her fault.
