Jeffrey Seib Question

Do you personally think Hucklebery Finn has a moral code he follows?  Does he try to do the right thing most of the time, or does he mostly try to look out for himself?

I think that Huck does have a moral code, but he doesn't quite understand what is right and what is wrong. He was raised to believe that blacks were inferior, and that his helping Jim become free is thought to be a grave sin. Huck tries to do the right thing most of the time, but he slips up every now and then. Huck wants to help Jim escape from the Phelps family, but he is going along with Tom's ridiculous plans to prolong the escape, which is selfish of both him and Tom. Overall, Huck means well and he has some sense of morality that leads him to try to do the right thing.

I think there is a lot of irony in this question when you look back at the story because if you were to ask Huck if he was doing the right thing he would say no. Which judging fromt he time frame of this story i suppose to society he would be correct however morally he almost always did the right thing besides stealing. He was there to look out for Jim even though he wasn't suppose to.
