Michael Klein's Discussion Question

Do you believe that censorship in general is acceptable? Whether it be in books, movies, or music, does censorship remove a part of the author's message, and/or limit his work? Explain your position.

I believe that nothing should be censored in books. That is a person's written word, their imagination. When a book is cendored, it's like standing next to a person and interuppting them eveyt time they start to say something conotroviersial or opinionated. It gets annoying. Although censorship happens in music and movies, I feel like it wouldn't be horrible if people started to remove censorship from these types of media. With censorships in movies, a person going into a movie should understand that some things in the movie are inappropriate for certain audiences and if people are offended by certain things, they shouldn't be seeing the movie in the first place. Same goes for songs, if your offended, don't listen to the song. Simple as that.

I think that censorship really isn’t acceptable. Why should we censor things in the world? We are just trying to use it to escape from reality. We just need to face the facts of reality of things that we are going to face. The two biggest censorship that may go through are the SOPA and PIPA laws. They are just trying to censor things on the internet but that isn’t going to stop people. We will still face bad things in reality. Censoring just blocks us from what is true. I find that when you censor a movie, book, etc… it really does take away the meaning of an author’s work. It will make the author not get their message across that they want to get across. It just puts limits on authors and how they want to portray a message.

I think censoring anything is wrong. Censoring works like books and music ruin the message that the author was trying to relay. The authors probably new what they were getting into when they wrote or created their masterpiece, censoring it ruins it and takes away the part that makes it unique.

I believe that censorship in general is acceptable for things such as songs on the radio or TV. shows. Anything that the general public will be exposed to and might not realize that there is going to be inappropriate language. I think it’s a good way of protecting the general public. Despite this I do not think books should be censored; generally people know what they are getting into before they read a book and if they don’t like the language they should just not read it. Same with movies or music that people choose to watch or listen to. I believe that censorship removes a large part of the author’s message. It definitely limits their work, because it changes the meaning, emotion and attitude of the work. I personally dislike listening to censored music just for that reason; it really just changes the entire feeling of the work just by changing one or two words.

I think that the extent of the censorship determines its effect. I can understand why some words are censored in music and movies. If these words are used to convey a message, I would have to disagree with the censorship. A lot of the time, innapropriate language is censored but the intent behind the language is ignored. Censorship is a wise decision if innapropriate language is just being thrown around but when it is used with a certain meaning behind it, that language should not be censored but examined and understood instead.
