Mrs. Gill's test prepping discussion question

William Faulkner accepted the Nobel Prize for literature in 1950 with a brief and truly moving speech. You can find it on p. 723 of your text, or easily on the web. (Try here.) What criteria does Faulkner propose for literature? What are the "universal truths" without which literature is "ephemeral and doomed"?
