Lauren Corley’s Scribe Notes

Scribe Notes- What occurred in class Friday 9/23

The day started like any other day in Mrs. Gill’s Period 4 ACC English 3 class. It was the second period of the day and most important of all it was Friday. I started class by being asked the usual question from Sam “You’re in this class?” and responded by saying that it was going in my Scribe Notes because I was the scribe today.  I was “sweetly” requested by Abby to have her be mentioned in my Scribe notes. Class started with Mrs. Gill taking attendance and prayer consisting of a “Hail Mary” and a “Glory Be”. Carlye’s Scribe Notes were not read today because she and some other students in the class were absent because of Youth Leadership, hence the reason why I’m scribing for today. Mrs. Gill told us that our journal prompt was about Homecoming since the games, dance, and Spirit Week were just around the corner. In the journal entry we were able to write about our plans for Homecoming this year, our plans from previous years and whether or not we were excited for Homecoming. The picture on the PowerPoint slide with our journal prompt were three or four girls with these huge corsages hanging around their necks. Mrs. Gill thinks these are girls from Texas, mentioning that she was from West Texas. The song that we listened to while journaling was “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles. Sam said that he wanted to write in silence but Mrs. Gill responded back that she has a lot of open-mindedness towards the music that we listen to. After the journal Sam mentions how it’s a “touching song” which led Mrs. Gill to talk a little bit about the music of The Bangles and that we shouldn’t disrespect The Bangles or even 80’s music for that matter. When it came time for us to read our journal entries Joe raised his hand to read was denied again. Mrs. Gill went on to explain that she didn’t want any of the students in the class to feel like they were “safe” and didn’t have to read because of Joe volunteering to read every time. Cody read about his plans from last year’s homecoming. He mentioned before he read that he didn’t write too much to begin with. Mrs. Gill mentioned that he could write about his dream of becoming Homecoming King. Mrs. Gill asked for Maddie to read but she refused to read her journal entry but said that she would read a journal entry next week. Mrs. Gill then called on Sam to read his journal but he refused as well and gave the same excuse as Maddie. Mrs. Gill then said that the class had the worst volunteer record of any of her classes. Kristen read her journal about her excitement for Homecoming this year. She wrote how the Homecoming dance was going to be better than the previous two dances since we had a new STUCO moderator and we were actually getting a DJ this year. Her journal sparked a discussion about how the music wasn’t great the past two Homecomings because it was someone’s iPod. We then had a discussion on whether or not people liked Michael Jackson. I reacted like “How could people not like Michael Jackson?!” I then mentioned how I grew up listening to a lot of “Oldies” music. Mrs. Gill mentioned before that she and her husband had a talk with their children about the differences between “good” and “bad” music some examples being Metallica and the Pussycat Dolls. Sam then goes on to say how he’s not much of a Metallica guy. Abby also tries to start singing “When I Grow Up” by the Pussycat Dolls but only sings those four words.
After reading the journals and having a discussion on different styles of music and how a lot of styles should be respected, we continued with the reading of Act I of Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. Due to the absence of several of the students some of the parts were switched around. During the time of switching around parts Max talked about how he didn’t have his driver’s license yet which everyone went on to a discussion on how far everyone lives from Kennedy. Abby, for some reason, said that she and Kayla were born an hour apart on the same day and in the same hospital. After finding out that she would be reading the part of Abigail, Libby reacts about the personality and actions of the character. With that, Sam mentioned how much of a “delightful” person Abigail sounded. After reaching some director’s notes in the play Mrs. Gill read about one of the characters in the story, John Proctor, and with that mentioned how ashamed she is of the character, being this character had an affair with a seventeen-year-old Abigail. Reading ahead to a line she would have to read, Libby was surprised about what she had to read and had to have Kayla read the line. After reading several pages, Mrs. Gill mentioned how Abigail was an all-around terrible person in every way, but still someone we could feel sorry for. Abby then took some offense to that. Going on with some descriptions of the characters and the storyline Mrs. Gill said that John Proctor didn’t want his affair with Abigail to be over just yet. Thinking we only had two minutes of class left, Mrs. Gill decided to stop but had us continue with the reading when we told her we had ten minutes of class left. We might be able to finish Act I by the end of class on Monday. At 9:40 in the morning another ACC English 3 class had come to a close.

By the way, our homework is to have our revisions of our Last High School Essay and our Literacy Memoirs finished by Tuesday with the original, turned in copy, all grading sheets, and a revised copy.
