Carlye Chaney's Discussion Question

In the story The Minister's Black Veil, why do you think that Mr. Hooper wears the black veil? How did you come to your conclusion? And is there any evidence in the text to support your reasoning?

I found that Mr. Hooper wore the veil because he was trying to hide something from society that he didn’t want people to know. In the story it said that he was hiding a sin. But I think that it was more than what he made it out to be. He was probably trying to teach a lesson to the people as a reverend, but at the same time he didn’t want people to find out what he had to hide. Most people just thought that he was crazy. I think that he was proving the lesson of how black our sins can be and how dark things are with the devil sometimes.

That last comment was by Andrew Manott, I forgot to put my name. Sorry, and if you don't believe me, I have proof on a document of this comment.

I believe that the minister wore the black veil to cover up something that he had done, such as a sin. A sin can be a dark thing that can cloud our lives. A sin can lead us into things that can cause us to feel guilt and remorse; this is why a sin is viewed dark. In the story we were told that the minister has hiding a sin. What kind of sin and to what extent was the sin, no one knows. However, it seems unnatural for someone to wear a black veil for a good portion of their life. I can see the point of view that the town’s people were coming from when they thought he was crazy. Honestly, he might have been a little crazy. But we will never know if it was out of craziness or to hide a dark sin that Mr. Hooper covered his face.

I think that Mr. Hooper wore the black veil for multiple reasons. He used it as a way to come to terms with whatever sin he had committed, and also as a way to remind himself of what he had done. It helped him to sort of keep him from interacting equally with others as he had before his sin. He also uses it as a way to teach others to avoid sin. It is his example of what sin is equivalent to: having a constant veil between yourself and others. He wanted to let others know that sin, even though it can be forgiven, is a permanent way to distance you from others.

I think Mr Hooper there are two logical explanations for Mr Hooper wearing the black veil. The first idea i came up with was maybe he was trying to hide a secret sin and he was trying to hide it, but at the same time punish himself through humility and by creating a barrier between him and the world. Another reason i came up with was maybe he was trying to hide himself from the sin in the world
