Zack Mushinski's Discussion Question

In Winter Dreams Dexter wants to marry Judy throughout the entire story.  Do you think he would have been happier at the end if he had married her? Why or why not?

If Dexter married Judy in the end, rather than trying to get her out of his life by moving away, then still most likely would have still had some regrets. He would have regretted leaving Irene, and Irene may had a bad future instead of Judy. Dexter even says in the story that he knew that he couldn't marry Judy, most likely because he knew that he would have regretted and felt bad about leaving Irene. He knew that he would have broken her heart if he left her. Overall, Dexter wouldn't have been any happier if he was married to Judy instead of Irene.

Kara N- I do not think that he would have been happier at the end had he married her. I think that one of the reasons that Dexter was interested in Judy was because she was a challenge to him and once he would have gotten her the challenge would be over and his life with her wouldn’t be as exciting. Also I think at the end of the story when he finds out that she is married and not as beautiful as before that he was finally about to move on. This way he could find a women that was a good match for him and have a much happier life.

I do not think that he would be happy at the end of the stroy if he was married to Judy. If he was married to her I think that she would committ adultry with another man. I do not think that he could trust her and I don't think that it would have been a good relationship. I personally think that he should have married Irene because I think that they would have been a happy couple.

No, i do not think Dexter would have been happier with Judy because she cannot control herself. She is a loose cannon and gives her love to everyone. Dexter wanted her love for himself and not for anyone else. Irene loves Dexter and that makes him happy. Although he thinks that Judy's love would make him happy, i don't think it would. I think he sees Judy's love has happiness but it is a false conception. Irene loves him and he should be happy with that.

In the story “Winter Dreams” I think Dexter would have lived a much much happier life without wanting to marry Judy. In my opinion I think that Judy ruins all hope of Dexter having a good and healthy relationship with a women. She doesn’t treat him that well. She says she will only love him if he is rich. So that right there doesn’t sound like a relationship full of love like it sound be. If Dexter would have just forgotten about her right there then he would have had a better life. He even left his fiancé for her. Letting go of Judy would have let Dexter move on with his life and care about someone or something else more important. He could have had children and been a good family guy if he stopped chasing after Judy. But he didn’t, so he suffered. (Annie Reuther)

Definitely not. I don't think Dexter was actually in love with Judy at all; he was infatuated by the idea of her. He didn't know Judy well enough to love her. Even when they were dating, she always seemed to keep him distanced. And he didn't really know much about her aside from the fact that she was beautiful and strong-willed. From the things he said and thought about her, he almost seemed to idolize her, and this is extremely unhealthy in any relationship. Because eventually he'd have to realize that she's just a person who has problems and does stupid things like everyone else does. And her beautiful appearance would diminish with time. By marrying Judy, Dexter probably just would've ended up disappointed.
