Between "Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Minister's Black Veil", which short story do you favor and why?

Kara N- The short story that I favor more is “Fall of the House of Usher”. I feel that this story was more entertaining to read. In the story Poe keeps the reader on their toes and not quite sure what is happening. By the end of the story it is easier to wrap your mind around what is happening but then Poe leaves the reader with a cliff hanger. I like stories that end like that because they leave it up to your imagination to try and figure out what happened next. I also like this story because it is more of a horror story and is more interesting to me.

Emily M. - Between those two stories, I would have to choose "Fall of the House of Usher". "The Minister's Black Veil" didn't really have much of a plot, and I also thought it was boring how the symbol of the black veil was used over and over. "Fall of the House of Usher" has more of an interesting plot and the ending was really good. I like the darker theme and the horror factor that most of Poe's stories have. I liked this story more than the other because it was an actual story with an actual plot.

Well Kate, I had very mixed feelings about both short stories that we have read. I feel like "The Fall of the House of Usher" was the more exciting and suspensful book, but I enjoyed "The Minister's Black Veil" because of the intellectual question of whether the minister wore the veil for an even deeper meaning. Poe's short story was much more enjoyable because of the suspensful plot, the horror, and best of all the tense ending. I love all of the horror and the supernatural theme of the story. Out of all of the short stories that we have read so far, Poe's is by far my favorite.

In response to Kate’s question I would have to say I am leaning more towards “The Fall of the House of Usher” but I am not saying I didn’t like the story about “The Minister’s Black Veil.” I personally enjoy stories that are more suspenseful and grab your attention into reading them such as “The Fall of the House of Usher.” This story was full of suspense and drama and I love being scared while reading stories. It keeps me wanting more of the story. But I do also like stories that make you think hard to search for the meaning such as “The Minister’s Black Veil.” Stories like that somewhat intrigue me. But if I had to make a final decision I would go with Poe! I enjoyed it very much. –Annie Reuther
