Katy Mosley Discussion Question

In the short story Winter Dreams, compare and contrast how Dexter feels towards Judy versus Irene. Who would he rather be with? Why?

Abby Primo- I believe that Dexter truly loved Judy more. The reason I say this is because if you think about it, Irene was kind of a rebound. He started dating her shortly after Lucy and he broke up. He still thought about her all the time and he ended up breaking up with Irene for Judy. I think he cared about Irene and liked her family, but underneath all of that his love for Judy seemed much stronger to me as a reader. The reason I say this is because he does not mention his feelings for Irene as much as he did for Judy. Dexter just seemed to overall love Judy more.

I think that Judy is his love and Irene is his fall back. He fought for Judy his entire life and he couldn't get her. I think if he had the chance to leave Irene for Judy, he would do it in a heartbeat. Irene is a nice girl but he doesn't love her like he loves Judy. He sees Irene as a safe way of living and sees Judy as a risk, but a risk he would be willing to take if he could be with her. I think he could never be happy with Judy because she likes too many other men. The only way that Dexter could truly be happy with Judy is if she was dedicated to him and him only.

Kelly O'Brien--I believe that Dexter would rather be with Judy than with Irene. Dexter has been in love with Judy ever since he first laid eyes on her when he was younger. I think Dexter tried to settle with Irene because he thought he couldn't have Judy. Dexter didn't feel a lot of sadness or regret when he broke off the engagement with Irene, even though he knew how upset her and her parents were. I think Dexter was passionately in love with Judy, and even after knowing that she married someone else he still called her a great beauty.
