What is the theme of Rip van Winkle? Is this theme still relevant today?

Jeffrey Seib- The theme to Rip van Winkle is, "don't run away from your temporary problems in life, because you could miss out on other important things." Rip van Winkle went away just to get away from his nagging wife. Becuase he did this, he missed out on the twenty most important years of American History. If Rip can Winkle would have tried to resolve the problems he was having with his wife instead of fleeing to a mountian, he would have seen his children grow up, his wife's last years and the creation of the United States of America. This is still relevant today, but not to the extent used in this story. If modern people run away from their problems instead of find ways to resolve them, they may miss out on some great opportunities.

Emily Rosenstein- I think that theme of Rip Van Winkle is "change is inevitable." Rip Van Winkle went away and fell asleep for twenty years and when he woke up, everything had changed. He tried to tell everyone that things couldn't have possibly changed but the fact of the matter is that time doesn't stop for anyone and he didn't realize that.

A theme that can be seen in the story of Rip Van Winkle is, “everyone must deal with their problems and not run from them or else a person might end up regretting it over time.” Rip ran away from his nagging wife and poor conditioned farm, and ended up falling asleep for 20 years missing many important events in a person’s life like his children growing up and the birth of his grandson. This theme is still relevant today because people do just run from their problems today and people do regret that they didn’t just solve the problem before it got out of hand. An example of this is a family that fights a lot and instead of fixes the problems early it just continued to grow until the issue was unfixable. – Tony Scalise Jr

Katrina Hauser- I believe that the theme for Rip van Winkle was that both progress and time stop for no one. During Rip’s time before he fell asleep, time seemed to be rather simple and carefree. This can be exemplified by the fact that many of the adults would sit around all day and debate politics in old newspapers. After Rip van Winkle’s slumber, the village had changed into a place of hustle and bustle, where people were quite to argue and debate politics. It was as if he was living in a different world, as the entire atmosphere of the village had changed. That doesn’t mean the change was good or bad, just different. Even though Rip fell asleep for years, life didn’t stop for him. He missed out on a whole new political structure as well as many possible memories.

Kristen Scego- The theme of the short story Rip Van Winkle, would be “don’t let time pass you by.” The theme says a lot about the story because Rip spent twenty years of his life sleeping, and when he woke up he was at a loss as to what to think with all the changes. Rip Van Winkle skipped out on the rest of his adult life and all the changes that occurred in the town and with all the people. For example when he woke up he found that his wife and one of his good friends were dead, and also major changes in government, and especially the town. The theme is relevant to today because a lot of people do not cherish each moment they have and before they know it years will have passed them by. Time is an amazing concept because of how quickly it really goes.

Abby Primo- I think that the theme of the short story "Rip van Winkle" is that running away from your problems does not make them better but can cause more problems for yourself in the future. This is definitely relevant to society today. If people have a problem, they either need to act and try to make the best of it or they could runaway, which is what Rip van Winkle did. He did not stay and try to better his situation and tell his wife to leave. No, he ran away from his problems and thought that would make them go away. Because he did that, he created more problems for himself. Waking up twenty years after a drunken sleep would be a big problem in my opinion. Today, people still runaway from their problems and do not deal with them in the right ways which would be not to run from it.

Annie Reuther-In my opinion I find the theme of “Rip Van Winkle” to be time. A more detailed theme would be that if you let time move on without you, you will never know how much you missed or what could have been different. Rip Van Winkle could have made more of his life but when he fell asleep that chance diminished. He wanted to get away from everything but when he did that he let the most important thing in life (time) pass him by. In the 20 years he was asleep he could have found a better wife to care for him more and he would have seen his children grow up. I do find this theme to be very relevant in society today. I feel as though it is easier to run away from your problem today. Many people try to take the easy way out of things and try to skip by in life. As they do that with their life they are missing out on many things that they will not get another chance to do.

Jennifer Kraemer-- I think that a theme in "Rip Van Winkle" is to not let time pass you by. Rip never really did anything productive in life then one day he falls asleep and all that time had passed. In the mean time he missed many major changes. He never got to see his son grow up or his daughter get married. On the other hand I think that another theme present is to go with the flow. Rip was not very demanding controling and after all that time he was able to come back into his village fit back into the routine and was even happier than he had been before.

Kristen Stazzone- I think the theme of "Rip Van Winkle"is to be happy for the things you actually have, and just because youhave some problems you can't run away from them. Rip ran away from his problems, and it ended up blowing up in his face. This definitely applies to present day for two reasons. The first is that it shows how taking the easy way out can come with consequences. The second is that just because you have hardships, doesn't mean you shouldn't face your problems. This definitely applies to present day because I think these days more people try to take the easy way out of things. Even for little things such as homework because it's too difficult, when they could easily ask the teacher for help. Or even loosing a best friend because the think it will be too difficult confronting the friend when they are in a fight.

Kate Antor-I think that one of the themes in "Rip van Winkle" is time and how we lack control over it. If Rip van Winkle knew he would fall asleep and wake up twenty years later, he probably would not have chosen to do so. He decided to run from his nagging wife and his work because he was being lazy and not dealing with his problems. Rip did not know that simply running from his problems would cause him to miss out on the rest of his life, and he did not have any control over it. Today it is relevant because we have no control over time and how it passes by. People should deal with their problems before it is too late and then he or she will wind up with regret, whether they wish the time flew by or not.

Joseph Rogers- I think that the theme of Rip Van Winkle is that if you run away from your problems that it won't make them better. It is just like how Rip ran away from his problems with his wife so that he could get some peace and quiet and not deal with her. This is just like society today becuase people always are trying to run away from there problems and they never want to face it themselves this is just like Rip he ran away from his problems and didn't want to face them. I also think that it is relevant today because Rip ran away to get his problem and got drunk and that is what people do when they have problems they go and get drunk so that is why I think it is relevent to society

Kelly O'Brien--I think the theme in Rip Van Winkle is that time passes us by. Rip missed nearly 20 years of his life. During these 20 years, some of his friends and family members died, and his town and many other things in his life changed. This is a relevant theme today because many people don't take advantage of the time they have. They become oblivious to the fact that things are changing around them. Before they know it, people only have a little bit of time left to catch up with all the things they missed.

Cody Gardner- I think that the theme of Rip Van Winkle is that time passes by quickly and you shouldn't try to avoid your problems. This happens to Rip in the story becasue Rip try's to escape his problems for a little bit one night. He then ends up falling asleep and waking up a long time later. His life passes by him without him knowing it, and now he he has a lot more problems to deal with than he did before. I think this is revelant today becasue many people try to put things off and deal with their problems later. This usaully only ends up to more problems and more work to be done.

Joe Lawrence-I believe that the theme of Rip Van Winkle is to not stray away from your problems in life by avoiding them because you could miss the important things in life. Rip Van Winkle not only slept away 20 of the most historical years in American history by running into the mountains and drinking the drink the men served to him but, he missed the most important years of his life. He missed not only the people’s lives he could’ve impacted but raising his kids, his wife’s death, and most importantly the greatest event in the history of our country the creation of it. I believe that he could’ve easily solved his problems with his wife by confronting her about it and making changes. Also, yes I do believe that this theme is relevant today. Many people get depressed and worked up with small problems in life today. Some problems even lead to committing suicide which seems to be relevant today as more and more young teens have been committing suicide and missing out on what they could’ve been. This is why you must always approach your problems in life and not stray away from them because you may miss something important and you don’t want to look back at your life when your old and say, “Well I could’ve or would’ve been,” something you never were.

The story of Rip Van Winkle has the reoccurring theme of living life while it is still there and not letting a second pass you by without living it to the fullest. This theme is still alive today and I think it will be forever. Rip Van Winkle wakes up after twenty years of sleep and everything has changed and he had slept through it all. I believe the author is conveying to the reader that life should be lived with no regrets and if you don’t try to do so, then life will pass you as if you slept through it. The author is saying that life shouldn’t be taken for granted because every day is a chance to do something new and if we don’t take advantage of life then we will end up like Rip Van Winkle, sleeping away twenty years of his life.

I would say that the theme of Rip Van Winkle is that you can’t always run from your problems. If you try to get away from them, then things could end up changing in a way that you don’t want them to. The way to deal with your problems is to just face them and try to continue on in life. Sure there may be consequences but they might not be as bad as to what could have happened if you ran away from your problems. Today, people are constantly running away from their problems. They are too scared to face facts and deal with the real world. They are always trying to take the easy way out and taking the easy way out could lead to even more bad things.
